How To Prepare Your Pool Table For Moving (The Right Way)

Is your pool table your pride and joy, and it’s time to take it with you to your new home? Whether you are moving to the next suburb, or the other side of the country, moving a pool table to a new home is still a struggle. It’s most likely the biggest, heaviest, and most fragile item you will need to move.

Are you looking to disassemble, pack, transport, and re-assemble your pool table in your new home? Learn from professional movers how to move a pool table the right way.

When to move a pool table on your own

If you are moving to the same town or a nearby suburb, then you may consider moving a pool table on your own. However, if you’re moving a long distance, then it isn’t such a financially viable option, due to the weight, and the extra fuel it will consume.

What you need to disassemble a pool table

Pool tables don’t usually get moved in one piece. Luckily, they are designed to be dismantled so that they can be transported safely and without damage.

Before you begin, it is essential to have three different things, to disassemble and move a pool table.

1. Time

Dismantling and packing a pool table is a very time-consuming process. Allow at least 60 minutes to disassemble and pack it ready to be moved.

2. Muscle Power

It’s essential to have the help of at least 3 trustworthy and physically fit people besides yourself. Ideally, you should have 4 or 5 helpers.

Pool tables are bulky, cumbersome, and also fragile and complicated.

One small mistake can lead to irreversible damage to your precious pool table. If you don’t have enough people to help you move it, then you should instead contact experienced and professional pool table movers.

3. Tools & Equipment

To dismantle, move, and set up a pool table, you’re going to need a bunch of tools and moving equipment. Make sure you have the following

  • Needle nose pliers or a staple remover
  • Set of flathead screwdrivers
  • Power drill
  • Socket wrench
  • Carpenter’s level
  • Safety Goggles
  • Moving Blankets
  • Plastic resealable bags
  • Packing tape
  • Lots of bubble wrap

Disassemble The Pool Table

First check if your pool table came with instructions on how to dismantle it for moving, if not, then you need to dismantle it in the following order:

  • Unfasten the pockets
  • Disengage the rails
  • Remove the felt
  • Take out the slate (s)
  • Remove the frame and legs

Packing a pool table

The way you pack a pool table is crucial for ensuring it arrives safely at its new home. If you don’t pack the table correctly, it can lead to damage during transit.

Use soft packing paper to wrap the pockets, balls, triangle and any other small accessories. Then put them in a clearly labelled cardboard box.

Next, wrap every rail, leg, individual slate, and frame element using moving blankets. Then tape the bundle together with packing tape. You can also wrap pool cues in a bundle inside one or two moving blankets.

Hiring a Professional Removalist

Moving a pool table is a highly stressful situation, which also includes a lot of time-consuming preparation, heavy lifting and manual labour from generous volunteers. If you’d rather put your feet up and relax, it may be a better idea to pay for professional pool table removal instead.

No-one likes the thought of moving house, especially on a hot, humid, energy sapping Queensland day. Enter the Optimove team. Motasem rang at 6.30am to tell us he was ahead of schedule .. from there, it was plain sailing! He and Isiah and Matheos hit the ground running – literally. They took care with our furniture, they were professional, polite and funny and nothing was too much trouble. I can certainly recommend Motasem and his team.
