First Apartment Checklist – What You Need To Move In

Moving out of home and into your first apartment is an exciting time and a right of passage for most people. But, it’s also a time when it’s easy to be underprepared and not realise everything you need which you may have relied on your parents for in the past.

Whether you decided to go on a shopping spree, commandeer from your parents, or find at a bargain price at a thrift store or online, there are so many things to make sure you have ready before the removalists arrive.

Here is what you need to move in.

    1. Mattress, Pillows, and Bedding.

A mattress and bed are essential when moving into a new apartment. While it may seem like sleeping on the floor for a night or 2 is ok, that can quickly turn into weeks before you get a chance to shop for a new mattress! If you have an old mattress, as soon as you sign your lease, you should start looking to buy a new mattress. Don’t forget to add new pillows, sheets, and blankets too.

    2. Toolkit

It’s inevitable that you will have to pull apart furniture and reassemble it at your new apartment. Without having a screwdriver and hammer, you’re not going to have a good time! You can pick up a cheap kit from a hardware store or Ikea, which has all the essential tools you will ever need in an apartment.

    3. Step Stool

If your apartment has high ceilings, or you are not tall, then having a step stool will be invaluable. Especially when you are first unpacking and cleaning your new home. Most step stools fold for easy storage and are lightweight.

    4. Power Boards & Extension Cords

This is something often taken for granted at home. But once you move into your new apartment and start to put things in position, you will find that you don’t have enough power points or the leads don’t reach! By buying a few power boards and extension cords in advance, you can set up your home exactly as you like it. Rather than based on where power points are located.

    5. First-Aid Kit

Accidents unfortunately happen. When moving, there is a higher chance than usual. Make sure you are prepared with a first aid kit which is easy to access on moving day. It should include gauze pads, bandages, painkillers, band-aids, and antiseptic wipes.

    6. Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies are essential for any apartment. It’s likely you will find areas which haven’t been cleaned properly, so make sure you have the supplies to clean from as soon as you start unpacking.

You should have cleaning spray, paper towels, trash bags, cleaning wipes, laundry detergent, toilet scrubber, toilet bowl cleaner, dish soap, sponges, air freshener, disinfectant spray. Also, don’t forget toilet paper!

    8. Dishes

You can buy a full set of dishes from a store like Target or Kmart at very affordable prices, which usually come in sets of 4. If you plan on entertaining regularly, you can always buy more.

    9. Kitchen Utensils & Appliances

If you plan on cooking, you can get a pots and pans starter kit from a department store. You’ll generally need a large pot, a saucepan, and a frying pan.

Also, make sure to get some cutting knives, a cutting board, aluminium foil, cling wrap, spatula, measuring cup, mixing bowls, bottle & can opener.

You’ll also want to get a fridge, toaster, microwave, kettle and blender.

    10. Furniture

You don’t want to be sitting on the floor all the time! A couch, chairs, tables and chairs are all essential items, depending on your needs and the size of your apartment.
