What To Pack First When Moving

Moving is getting real? We know it is a big step. Let us help you to organize what to pack first. Packing might be the most important task, but it is also the hardest. Having to select your belongings and pack them into boxes needs to be well done with care. Otherwise, many of them could be misplaced or damaged.

Taking the proper time to complete this task is crucial for your physical and mental health.

Setting a schedule will help you control which days and places in your house will be the next to pack into boxes. Also, make a list and check after everything is packed.

AtOptimove, we recommend starting with the less frequently used rooms and ending with the most trafficked areas. Here is a list about where to start, easy and in order:

    1. Garage, attic and basement

These places tend to have a lot of things that might not be useful anymore. Make sure you pack only the things you will need in the future. You can sell the rest at a garage sale or give them away to friends, family or charity to help others. Remember when old things go, new and better things come. The garage is also a great place to store boxes from other rooms while packing to move.

    2. Spare rooms

Spare rooms such as a guest room, study, and playroom are easier to pack because they usually only have the essentials. A guest room will mostly have pillows, sheets, lamps and wardrobe items. A benefit of packing these rooms early is you will have extra space to keep storage boxes. You can also avoid the stress of having so many boxes in the wrong place.

    3. Kitchen

The kitchen needs to be done with extra care, as there are many fragile and sharp items. Be sure to use suitable packing materials to put kitchen items into boxes, such as bubble wrap and packing paper. Leave only a set of plates, cutlery and glasses that you might need before the moving day. You can also buy some plastic cutlery sets, which you can also later use for picnics or family trips.

    4. Living room

This room is one of the most used in general, for family and friends to spend time together, so it’s good to pack it later. Pack items such as books, table games, TVs, artwork, decorations, ornaments, picture frames and other items after the kitchen.

    5. Bedrooms

For this room, you will need to pack clothes that are out of season first. You should only leave the essentials like underwear, socks, pajamas, and clothes you know you will need to go to work or wear at home. Two days before you leave, you can pack the rest of your clothes. Select the ones you will need for the moving day, and don’t forget to pack your spare linen, like sheets and pillows.

    6. Bathrooms

This room is the very last one as it is the most used room in the house. You can pack everything one day before moving. Leave only the essentials for the next day, such as a towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and a comb. Remember to pack them after you use them on moving day.
